Location: Hollywood ArtsPark
Italy’s acclaimed HIT Week tour returns to Downtown Hollywood on October 5, 2013 when The Rhythm Foundation presents Hollywood ArtsPark Experience: Italy, a celebration of contemporary Italian music and culture featuring top international artists in concert. The Hollywood ArtsPark will host the only Florida date on the HIT Week tour, the foremost traveling showcase of Italy’s current music scene, joining New York, Los Angeles and Toronto. The event is free and open to the public.
Hollywood ArtsPark Experience: Italy will feature a live performance by Italy’s new-generation masters of taranta, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, and a deejay set by renowned DJ, producer and musician Nicola Conte. The event will also showcase Italian bands chosen by the public in a nationwide music contest to win a spot on the HIT Week tour. The park will be filled with authentic Italian food and drinks as well, and foodies will enjoy an Italian cooking demonstration by the winner of the Chef Contest.
A must-see band on the festival circuit, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino have established themselves as the leading force in the revival of the mysterious Italian folk style known as pizzica, or “taranta.” American media response for this spellbinding, intensely rhythmic music, whose dancer has been called Italy’s answer to the whirling dervish, has already been overwhelmingly positive, with glowing write-ups from The New York Times, Chicago Reader, and The New Yorker, who called the group “utterly beguiling and trance-inducing.” Recent CGS tours have taken the band to such high profile stops as Austin’s SXSW, NYC’s GlobalFEST, Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center, Canada’s Montreal Jazz Festival, the UK’s WOMAD and the international WOMEX Festival.
Italian DJ and producer Nicola Conte became internationally famous with his loungey brand of jazz that relies extensively on bossa nova, but is also heavily influenced by the swinging soundtracks of Italian films of the ’60s and ’70s.
This event is made possible by City of Hollywood, the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency, the Italian Promo Trade Agency, Italian Federation of Music Industry, the Italian Trade Commission, Ministro dello Sviluppo Economico and Puglia Sounds. Local partners include the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce Southeast, Consulate General of Italy in Miami, National Italian American Foundation, FIAT of North Miami, Peroni, and AmericanAirlines.
