Imagine if Duke Ellington’s big band fell into carnival in Brazil’s Northeast musical treasure chest? This is the thrilling SpokFrevo Orquestra, featured artist for the inaugural Hollywood ArtsPark Experience: Brazil. SpokFrevo Orquestra arose in 2003 from musical experiences that date back to the late nineties, led by the virtuoso Inaldo Cavalcante de Albuquerque, aka Maestro Spok, who plays the part of saxophonist, arranger and musical director. Spok fronts the 19 member group - a real big band with full horns and rhythm sections, bass, drums and guitar. In Pernambuco, the frevo genre is constricted to street festivals, but SpokFrevo Orquestra takes it from supporting role to the main attraction, highlighting its original texture and complex playing techniques. The sound is tight and sophisticated, yet extremely raw and joyous as carnival itself.
Arts Park Experience: Brazil is the first in a series of events produced by the Hollywood CRA in partnership with Rhythm Foundation. The night features live music, family-friendly fun, food, drinks, and a chance to enjoy Hollywood's charming downtown.
